NARRATIVE DESIGN

Narrative designers create the story told throughout the course of a game, devising a plot that coordinates with level design and gameplay mechanics. These writers may use programming software to construct branching dialogue that changes depending upon a player’s choices and must ensure that the typically brief amount of character interaction in cinematic cutscenes between play offers sufficient explanation to fill the player in on plot developments without becoming repetitive or confusing. Narrative designers also supply various written material inserted throughout the game, such as supplementary world-building material (journals, letters) and tutorial explanation text. Narrative designers must consider how the story informs and drives gameplay, a puzzle that requires a strong understanding of game construction.
