The Jeep’s wiper blades creaked as they passed from right to left and back again. The rain was almost deafening, a far cry from the clear sky that had preceded their night’s slumber, and it sounded as if it were pounding on the roof of a tin shed rather than that of a car.

“Those wipers sound like your knees, Gray,” Ainsley said, chuckling to herself as she strained to see the hospital entrance through the downpour. “I’ll be winching you out of that bed before long.”

“Aye, I’d be so lucky,” he said. “I’d have more chance of you feeding me strawberries with one hand while you fanned my naked body with the other.”

“Like Cleopatra?”

“Exactly like Cleopatra.”

Ainsley took one final rummage through her bag to check she had everything she would need to get ready for dinner that night. It had taken Graham the best part of a month to get a table, and she had chosen her favourite little black dress for the occasion.

He really did love that dress.

“Are you going straight to work from here, love?”

Graham laughed. “Aye, via a bakery. I owe Charlie a breakfast roll from about three weeks ago, and the lad won’t let it go. And to be honest, today seems like as good a day as any to repay that debt.”

“So you won’t be having one, then?”

He grinned like a naughty schoolchild. “Oh, I never said that now, did I?”

Ainsley unclipped her seatbelt and leaned across the car, taking Graham’s stubble-encrusted chin in her hand, and kissed him.

A kiss she held for what felt like quite some time. But it felt like time well spent.

“I’m clocking off at five.”

“And I’ll be here a little after that, then.”

She kissed him again, smiling at him from ear-to-ear as their lips parted.

“Best I fuck off then,” she said.

“Best you do.”
