Chapter 17

Tasha

Waking up to a new day with Mike next to me wasn’t a first, but that didn’t make it any less special. I stared at his handsome features and wondered if anytime I woke with him would feel like a first.

Like a gift.

Close up and without my glasses, I could see the soft freckles along his cheeks and forehead. Spots I usually missed with our height difference. Spots I wanted to memorize and find real-life constellations that matched.

Cozy and still a little drowsy, I let my thoughts wander.

Mike was in my bed.

He’d called me his boom.

He wanted another chance, and I knew I was going to give it to him.

This thing between us is going to work. His words replayed in my head. Just wait and see. I’ll tell you ‘I told you’ so in twenty years or so.

Twenty years or so.

He wanted to be in my life twenty years from now. In the light of a new day, his words sounded even sweeter than before.

“Morning,” his voice rumbled. I realized I hadn’t noticed he’d woken up.

“Morning.” I blinked and watched how the sleep faded from his eyes and was replaced with something else.

Something warm and gooey and very, very tempting.

“If you don’t tell me to back up, I’m going to kiss you, Tasha.” His voice was thick with constraint. I blinked.

“Why do you think that’s some kind of threat?” I asked quietly, my eyes soaking in the sight of him.

“Tasha,” he warned. His jaw clenched, and even though he was fully dressed, sans socks, it felt like every muscle in his body was clenched tightly. He was adorable when he got all intense and sexy. I smiled. My hands rose between us, and I didn’t think. I just reacted. I lifted my body a little and leaned in closer until my lips hovered over his.

“Shut up and kiss me, Mike.” A rumbled sound vibrated through his chest.

When our lips touched, the world faded away in the most beautiful of ways. His kiss was urgent but tender. Hot but sweet. The contradictions only made me needier and hungrier for him. I whimpered with disappointment when he pulled his lips away from mine, and I blinked. I had no idea how or when he had rolled me onto my back, but I wasn’t complaining. Especially when his body was settled perfectly between my legs, his blue eyes burning into mine. Mike rested most of his body weight on his elbows, giving me just a little of it. His warmth and weight felt beautiful. His head dipped down, and he gave me one more small kiss before he pulled back.

“Now, that’s a great way to wake up.”

“Not too shabby,” I agreed. Now that I was more awake, I realized just how awake I was. “I have to use the bathroom,” I whispered, half-embarrassed about having to use the facilities. It was stupid to be embarrassed. Everyone had to, but it felt like a very possible mood killer. His eyes sparkled with humor and warmth.
