Chapter Eighteen

I shut the door to room 668, relieved to be out of there. I could still hear Lily giving Neal an earful, with little to no response from him.

He was penitent enough I thought their marriage had a chance to recover once Lily was done making him suffer for his infidelity. Some couples therapy would help, too. But only time would reveal if the affair was a death blow to their relationship or a chance to start fresh.

I would have bet money neither of them was responsible for Phoebe’s death. Since I knew Andy didn’t do it either, my pool of suspects had started to narrow.

I still felt like Frank needed to be at the top of the list. Whatever was going on at Braithwaite Industrial Storage had concerned Phoebe enough she’d almost missed her own wedding cruise. Not to mention that Frank was just sleazy. He was guilty of something. I could feel it in my bones.

Rhonda was still a possibility, although unlikely. Video footage showed Phoebe had left their late-night meeting on her own two feet. Unless they’d met up again, during the security camera blackout, Rhonda was probably in the clear.

Although it wasn’t impossible Dale and Susan had killed their own daughter–I’d seen enough Dateline to know it did happen–I’d seen nothing to indicate a motive. In fact, after talking with Neal, Phoebe had a stronger motive to kill her parents than the other way around.

Sawyer had opportunity but not motive, and if he’d had something to hide, he wouldn’t have admitted to being one of the last people to see her in her room. Of course, I wouldn’t have even known to ask about it if Windsor the butler hadn’t told me. Still, Sawyer had no reason to want his baby sister dead.

The only sibling I had yet to interview, was Ivy. The truth was, Ivy intimidated me. She had a brash personality, and unless a reasonable opportunity presented itself, I had no plans of questioning her. Her husband was a lawyer. Corporate or not, Clyde still had the ability to threaten a lawsuit, and now that I had become aware of my sizable assets, I kind of wanted to hold on to them.

That didn’t mean I wasn’t planning on poking around and trying to determine where Ivy had been the night Phoebe was killed.

I believed, deep in my gut, that this attack was not done by a stranger. Someone had lured Phoebe to the storage area on the fourth floor, and I couldn’t imagine a scenario in which she’d have left her room in the middle of the night to meet someone she didn’t know.

Tonight’s dinner would give me an opportunity to observe the bridal party and the family to see if anyone acted suspicious.

The dress code for the evening was as your favorite fictional character. Perhaps the killer’s choice of who to represent—and whether hero or villain—would be their tell.

I also hoped I wouldn’t be in a matching outfit with Neal again.
