Once a month on Saturday, Auntie and I go shopping for anything she does not grow. Jonah and Bessie are going with us today. Mr. Buster asks to come along, but Auntie says no. Then she brings up the picture show, I guess because he looks sad. “It might be nice. I do work a lot.”

Smiling, he mentions the new shoes he bought. He did not get the brown ones Auntie recommended. That color is too quiet for him, he says. “You like lavender, Shuma?”

Auntie’s eyes practically jump out of her head. “At times … Easter colors suit a person just fine, I imagine.”

We are headed for the bus stop when the iceman’s truck pulls onto our street. “Fifteen or thirty?” he asks Auntie. She wants thirty pounds of ice since no more can be delivered until Monday. He walks into our house to put it in the icebox and grabs the money from the cookie jar once he’s done. Then off shopping we go.
