Eroding iron streaked cliff walls red,

a crime scene eons old. Armadas

of schist and sandstone sheared through waves of time

as the swollen Colorado swayed

its boa against earth flesh, white water

churning into froth, the elemental

striptease. I opened the pages that were not

stuck together, to read and reread them

like river on bedrock. But when my raft

flipped on a boulder, his book bobbed out

of my keeping, dodging a traffic of rocks.

Perhaps a hawk swooped, reflected,

and veered away. Perhaps some poems snagged

on the crowbar of sunshine that pried

the canyon further open, diverting

a darker channel, never finding bottom.
