They left Hannahâs car at Pearl Park near Diamond Lake, and cruised north toward Hylandâs address. They circled the block twice, looking for the house. Hannah had to squint in the dark to make out the numbers. There. It was a modest white clapboard house on a narrow lot midway down the block. The paint had peeled in places, and the grass was sparse, not well cared for. There were no flowers or shrubs. Although they couldnât find a second entrance at the front or sides of the house, Noel pointed out two mailboxes. They crept up the alley and found Hylandâs entrance in back, topping a sagging stairway to the second floor. No lights anywhere in the neighborhood, but it was late.
âHis place must be tiny,â Hannah said. âThe whole apartmentâs under the eaves, and itâs not a big house to begin with.â
âLooks like Mr. Hyland is saving whatever money he has for his car and his clothes. Iâll bet his Neighborwatch buddies donât have any idea he lives in a place like this. Interesting guy, donât you think?â
âI donât get it. Whatâs he doing with that bunch? Whatâs he getting out of it?â
âContacts, maybe. Political backers? Or investors, maybe? Iâll bet thatâs it. Heâs running some kind of scam, building their trust, helping them out, thenâWham!âwhen heâs hooked âem, he strategically separates them from a healthy sum of money.â He chuckled at Hannahâs expression. âDonât look so shocked. Happens all the time.â
âI wonder where he works and what he does for a living aside from Neighborwatch,â Hannah mused. âOr if he doesnât work at all, who pays his bills?â
âWho knows? Maybe the last people he scammed. Iâll try to find out, but it might take awhile.â
He drove her back to her car. They stood in the cold parking lot, their warm breaths mingling. Noel slid his arms around her, kissed her lightly. âIâll give you time to think about it.â He grinned and shook his head. âBut one of these days⦠Personally, I canât take much more of this.â
âNeither can I,â she said, snuggling against him. âBut nowâs just not the right time.â She paused for a minute, considering her words. âYou know, Noel, Iâm usually pretty shy.â
He made a yeah, right face.
âNoâreallyâand Iâm generally not very demonstrative, not in public, at least. Butââ
âHey, Iâm not either. But it wouldnât have gone much further, anyway.â His eyebrows rose, waggled. âAt least not until we got in the car.â
She blushed again, picturing a windshield frosted with hot breath. âIn the car. Iâm not sure what to say about that.â She fingered the lapel of his coat for a minute, then looked up at him. âI really enjoyed myself.â
âI know,â he said. âI could tell. So did I.â He kissed her softly, let her go, and opened her car door. âSoon,â he had said. âVery soon.â
Once back in her apartment, Hannah chuckled as she picked Max up and scratched his belly. âItâs been an interesting day, Max, you old fat cat.
