CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

Harry stared at the note in his hand, caught a few sentences as he scanned it. He thought back to his father’s body, what the man had suffered on the floor of his house.

‘And this is Nightingale’s writing?’

Drake gave a nod.

‘As far as I can tell, yes,’ he said. ‘I’ve done a comparison with various other samples I was able to get a hold of and they match. Why do you ask?’

‘The note we found on my father’s body,’ Harry said, ‘there’s something not right about it.’

‘How do you mean?’

‘I’m not sure that he wrote it. I can’t say for sure, but it doesn’t look like his writing. Not to me, anyway.’

‘You sure about that?’ Drake asked. ‘I thought the same of Nightingale’s and all the others. But of course, the confessions were put down in the last few moments before death. Stress can have a surprisingly debilitating effect on someone’s ability to write even their own name.’

‘I get that,’ said Harry, handing the note back to Drake. ‘I may have hated the bastard, but I knew his writing.’

Drake picked up the note and slipped it back into the folder.

‘I’m assuming this is where I ask how I can help?’ Harry asked.

‘Actually, it’s me who has come here to ask you that very question,’ said Drake. ‘I’ll need to speak with whoever is leading the investigation.’

‘Well, it’s not me,’ Harry replied with a shrug.

Drake let out a long, calm sigh, then sat forward again, his hands playing with the pipe he’d filled earlier.

‘Difficult for you, I’m sure, but it’s the right decision. You can’t be a part of this investigation, Grimm. You just can’t, and you know that. I mean, there’s conflict of interest, and then there’s this.’

‘I want to find who did this to him as much as anyone else, believe me.’

‘Oh, I do,’ said Drake. ‘But there’s already too much emotion in how you just said that. Being objective would be a challenge.’

That comment annoyed Harry. Maybe it was meant to, though, he thought.

‘I’m always objective.’

Drake laughed, but Harry couldn’t help but notice a cold edge to it.

‘We all think that, don’t we?’ Drake said. ‘Remain apart from what we’re investigating, keep that distance. Remind me how you ended up in the Dales in the first place?’

‘Been reading up on me, then?’

‘Let’s just say I’m thorough when it comes to my research, if you know what I mean. I like to really know a person before I meet them.’

‘You say thorough. I say nosy bastard.’

Harry could feel his irritation growing. As they’d talked, he’d started to like Drake, to warm to him. Now, though, as with all but a very select few who he found himself growing fond of, Harry suddenly was going off the man. He’d already thrown a chair across the room in the past couple of days; he had a horrible feeling he was growing close to doing so once again. But that wasn’t going to get either of them anywhere. If Drake was here to help, then he had to give him the benefit of the doubt.
