The Sinclair mansion was a brilliant display of grandeur that night. Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead, casting a warm glow on guests who twirled and danced beneath them. The scent of expensive perfumes wafted through the air, melding seamlessly with the savoury aroma of gourmet hors d'oeuvres.

But amidst the laughter, chatter, and melodies, I remained on high alert. The lush surroundings, the twinkling lights, the resplendent gowns—none of it could lull me into complacency.

Sipping my champagne, I made casual rounds, nodding to acquaintances, but always watching. There was a tension in the air, a subtle undercurrent I couldn't quite put my finger on.

The atmosphere was intoxicating. The mansion, bathed in a gentle golden hue, was a spectacle of beauty and opulence. But amidst the decadence, one figure stood out like a shadow in daylight. Liam.

As if magnetically drawn, my gaze fixed onto him. He was across the room, surrounded by a few socialites hanging onto his every word, yet his eyes—those cold, calculating eyes—were fixed solely on me. Time seemed to stand still, as everyone and everything else became an insignificant blur.

His lips curled into a smirk, but his eyes held no mirth. They promised retribution, a settling of scores. The opulent chandeliers overhead, the murmur of conversations, the soft refrains of a waltz playing in the background—all only heightened the tension of our unspoken standoff.

My grip tightened on the champagne flute, feeling the fragility of the glass under my fingers. I had to remind myself to breathe, to not let him see any hint of the trepidation he instilled.

The silent duel ended when Liam was pulled away by a guest, but not before he raised his glass in my direction in mock salute. It was clear: the night was far from over, and the games had only just begun.

As I discreetly followed, I watched him pull aside a well-dressed gentleman, one I recognized as an influential member of high society. Leaning in, their voices were hushed, but with sharpened senses, I managed to catch fragments of their conversation.

"...you know how the Sinclairs betrayed us, Everett blood runs in my veins and they've taken enough from us," Liam's voice held a persuasive venom.

The gentleman, sceptical, replied, "The Sinclairs have always been honourable. I've known Geoffrey and Lorraine for years. What you're suggesting..."

Liam quickly interjected, cutting him off, "What I'm suggesting is that history has been kinder to them than they deserve. Tonight, they'll be reminded of their betrayal."

Before I could delve deeper, a lady approached Liam, asking him for a dance. He hesitated for a moment, giving the gentleman a cryptic note before being led to the dance floor. My pulse quickened.

I subtly maneuvered myself close to another cluster of guests, where Liam was now engrossed in conversation with a well-known historian.

"It's all in the archives," Liam whispered, ensuring he was heard only by those intended, "The Sinclairs took what wasn't theirs. Tonight, they pay for their sins."

The historian, clearly taken aback, said, "I've studied both families, and this is news to me.
