Vicki and Darrion explained what they had been through since the disappearances. Maggie listened with interest, covering her mouth when Darrion told of the deaths of her father and mother.

Vicki described Charlie and the couple he had stayed with. “They’re in GC custody now, but we have someone on the inside who said she’d help get them out.”

Maggie bit her lip. “First thing you need is a good night’s rest.”

“What about your story?” Darrion said.

The woman smiled. “In the morning. Let me get you some nightclothes.”

Vicki awoke from a dead sleep a few hours later. A thunderous explosion rocked the neighborhood and a plume of fire and smoke shot hundreds of feet into the air. Vicki and Darrion changed into their clothes and ran outside. They wound their way through the neighborhood until they reached the fire. Vicki’s heart sank. Zeke’s gas station was completely engulfed in flames.
