Chapter 5

“Where are we?” Leslie asked when the car rolled to a stop. She lay with her head on Conrad’s lap, completely content to stay there for the rest of the evening. She knew her body was in shock, and she figured half her brain was still reeling from the fiasco of what had just happened.

“Somewhere without crowds or cameras. Back at the hotel. Rear entrance,” Conrad said.

Leslie sat up. When she had slid down into Conrad’s lap, he had made a pillow for her out of his jacket. The anxiety attack from the crowds had left her weak and shaky.

One of the bodyguards held up her phone. The camera was facing forwards. “To check your hair, Miss Wallis.”

She took it, amazed at how thoughtful Conrad’s security team was. It crossed her mind that they had gained this knowledge from experience. How many celebrities had they protected? Leslie’s stomach turned at the thought that she was now one. She looked at her image, made a few adjustments, and handed it back. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” He tucked the phone back into the right compartment in her purse.

A guard went first, to sweep their route for any possible surprises. Finding none, he came back and signaled for them to start moving. The whole process went smoothly; for the first time that night there were no flashes in their faces.

When the door to the penthouse closed and Conrad firmly locked it behind them, Leslie sighed. “Bathroom,” she said.

He nodded.

She went inside and used the facilities. The maids had come in and cleaned while they were gone. Everything was spotless and serene, like a mansion in a tony location. After washing her hands, she went over to the towel rack to dry them. The terrycloth was so soft, she had a thought of losing her hands in it. She lifted it up to her face. It felt like she was nuzzling a cloud.

All of a sudden, a wave of exhaustion hit her. The anxiety attack had taken its toll and her brain finally let her body know how it felt. Weary to the bone. She stared at the floor, her eyes refusing to focus as her mind slowly went blank.

The tiled floor looked cool, comforting. She slowly went down onto her knees and leaned forward until her forehead pressed against the marble floor. She closed her eyes and let the coolness calm her.

Time passed. She knew she should get up, but instead she stayed where she was. It felt too good to move, and the place was impeccably clean. Where else could you lie on a bathroom floor like this?

“Leslie? You okay in there?”

“Yeah. You can come in. I’m done.”

She heard Conrad enter the room.

“You sure you’re okay?”

“Yeah, the tile feels really good on my forehead.”

“Looks kind of uncomfortable.”

“No, the towel makes it comfy. Try it.” Without looking up, she reached for the towel beside the one she had taken done and tugged on it. She held it up to Conrad.

She could hear him walk up to stand next to her.
