“If you must know, we don’t want you back. You refuse to see another person’s point of view. You are uncompassionate. You left Catherine in ruins and why? Because a perfect plan didn’t take into account the possibility of other forces at work.”

“We’ve had this before Gabriel. Catherine might not have come up with the idea but she certainly accepted and she didn’t even ask me; the bait. Did it cross any of your minds that I might have agreed to it?”

“If you were going to agree to it anyway, then why are you so pissed off?”

“Because I didn’t even get the choice. That’s why.”

“And Catherine is going to kill herself because of it.”

“Bullshit. She’s a saint. She can’t die.”

“Job was a saint as well. He died. Anyway I was being metaphorical. It was all we could do to persuade her to leave it for three months.”

“She is going to kill herself? For me?”

“Yes. She has made up an imaginary oath so that she will come to Nottingham to watch over Hope. It is merely an excuse to be close to you.”

“If she tries it, I’ll put a restraining order on her.”

“If she tries it, I will have to demote her.”

“What?”

“She is willing to be mortal so she can be with you.”

“Really?”

“Yes, really.”

“Hold on. Only God can demote a saint.”

“As Metatron, I can in God’s absence. If she gets demoted, she will have a maximum of thirty years left to live.”

“And she’s willing to do that for me?”
