CHAPTER 9

HOMEWARD BOUND

Daru’s entire body shook as he slowly regained consciousness. He had no idea where he was, or what had happened. His head ached, and he felt the fear from earlier rise again in his stomach. The familiarity of the data pad, still clutched to his chest, gave him small comfort. Around him was darkness, but gradually his eyes started to adjust. He was surrounded on all sides by the same ethereal, shimmering, shifting surface as earlier. Unlike before, however, everything was now bathed in a frightening crimson colour. Memories of Dax firing his blaster came flooding back. He had caused this, no doubt. Also, the temperature had dropped considerably. Daru was cold. His fingers felt numb, and there was a faint vapour when he exhaled. It felt like he wasn’t standing, but he wasn’t sitting or lying either. Instead, he seemed to be sort of floating – no, not floating – something was supporting him from below, or maybe he was being suspended from above. He shook his head violently to clear his thoughts. His vision improved a little more. He definitely couldn’t see either the ship or the sky and at this moment he couldn’t decide which was more worrying. Daru strained his neck to look behind him, and the image of Captain Dax slowly came into focus. Thin, almost translucent tendrils were holding him from above and below, presumably suspending him in a similar fashion to Daru. He seemed to be conscious. A familiar voice broke the silence.

“Daru? Daru are you awake?” It was the voice of Aye-Eye.

Daru’s mouth felt so dry it was an effort to talk. “Yes, Aye-Eye, I’m awake.” His head ached more when he spoke. “How long was I unconscious?”

“Two hours, thirty-six minutes and fifty-four seconds approximately.”

“Great. At least it wasn’t two hours thirty-seven minutes.” At least his sense of humour was still intact.

“I don’t understand, Daru.”

“Doesn’t matter. Thanks anyway, Aye-Eye.” Daru craned his head towards Dax. “Are you awake, Captain?”

The captain groaned affirmatively, seemingly also disorientated and confused. Daru gripped the data pad as best as he could and lifted it higher to give Aye-Eye’s scanners a better line of sight. “Any idea what happened or where we are, Aye-Eye?”

“It appears we are somewhere inside the planet, Daru. Apart from that, I have no new information. I have rerun the same scans as earlier and learned nothing of any use.”

“Aaargh!” With a sudden burst of energy, Dax let out a roar of frustration. He pulled and writhed against the tendrils. “I’ve had enough of this nonsense. Where’s my laser blaster, I’m getting out of here.” Dax reached down to his side, searching for his weapon. His holster was empty, prompting a second roar from the big man. “Blast it, I must have dropped it. Pass me your blaster, boy, quick.”

Daru had no intention of giving Dax his weapon, but all the same, when he looked at his holster, the blaster was also missing. Before he could respond, a loud but calm noise rang out all around them.
