Ten minutes and one quick change later, Layla and Ava were galloping towards Grimoria. Glacier was still looking pale and weakened, but she strained every muscle to complete Layla’s mission, refusing to slow down until they arrived at the slopes of the Forbidden Bridge.

“So, this is it,” said Ava in a wobbly voice, gazing up at the wall of purple fog that separated the two kingdoms. Compared to the gorgeous sunshine of Unicorn Island, the swirling mists of Grimoria seemed colder and more unwelcoming than ever.

Layla shrank back in the saddle, hesitating. Glacier twisted round to nuzzle her rider gently on the leg, letting Layla know that there was still time to change her mind.

Although Layla’s hands were shaking and there were at least a dozen butterflies zooming around inside her tummy, she couldn’t stop now. Instead, she pushed her glasses up her nose and encouraged her unicorn to go on.

The riders soon disappeared behind the fog, coming out on the other side in the foothills of Grimoria. It was every bit as spooky and mysterious as Ava remembered. Sharp-edged rocks jutted out from the mountains, screeching bats flew overhead, and unexplained bursts of light flittered across the sky.

“Maybe I should have spent the summer on that cruise with my mums,” she groaned, trying not to look too closely into the gloomy, inky-black shadows.

Layla and Glacier took the lead, noticing the same crimson stems growing as thick as rope all along the hillside, dipping relentlessly in and out of the rocky earth.

“We’ve just got to follow the roots,” Layla called behind her, hoping it would be just as easy to find their way back out again later.
