CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

“What an absolute arsehole,” said Savage as they walked away from the interview rooms. She was in the lead, crashing through the doors like she was on the warpath. “It’s men like Patrick that are the problem, sir. How can he not think he did anything wrong?”

“Brought up to think they’re untouchable,” said Kett as they entered the bullpen. “But it’s not just him, is it? We need to get a confession from Sarah, too.”

“That’s going to be tough,” said Clare, who was standing in the middle of the office, apparently waiting for them. “Because she’s just pressed charges against you, Robbie, for pushing her down the stairs.”

“For fuck’s sake,” he said. “It’s not true.”

“Doesn’t matter,” said Clare. “I just got a call from Derek at the Eastern Daily Press, and some twat from the Sun. They both asked me ‘If,’ and I quote, ‘self-confessed vigilante DCI Kett has taken another victim?’”

“For fuck’s sake!” he said again. “I never confessed to being a vigilante, and I didn’t throw that girl down the stairs.”

“We’ve just spoken with Patrick, sir,” said Savage. “He confessed to spiking three women and physically assaulting them.”

“Rape?” said Clare.

“I’m not sure, sir. I don’t think so. But what he did is almost as bad. According to him, Sarah was the mastermind behind it, and she has videos of the attacks on her phone.”

“Blackmail?”

“I think she just liked having power over them, sir,” said Savage.

“We’ll get her,” said Clare. “We’re just going to have to be careful about how we do it. He say anything else?”

“He told us he was at the cabin a week ago, sir,” said Kett. “Last Friday, sometime between ten and eleven in the evening. Claims he and Sarah were there to scope the place out, they saw two men arguing. One dressed in black, with white shoes.”

“Craig Heilig was wearing all black with white shoes,” said Clare, and Kett nodded.

“The other was in camouflage, with a bright orange hat.”

“Which is exactly what Jeremy Truelove was wearing when he ran from us yesterday,” added Savage.

Clare frowned.

“The guy from the cult,” she explained. “The one who ran all those cars off the road.”

The frown remained.

“The tosstopus, sir.”

“Right, did we bring him in for that?” the Super asked.

Kett and Savage exchanged a look.

“Uh, no, sir,” said Kett. “It was a couple of reckless overtakes and nobody was hurt. I think he has some learning difficulties, he just panicked. And we had bigger fish to fry.”

“Well, maybe now’s the time, eh, Detectives?” said Clare. “Since he appears to have more to do with this than he let on.”

“Yes, sir,” said Kett.

Clare marched towards the kitchen, muttering beneath his breath.

“You’d think he’d be a little happier this time of year, wouldn’t you?” said Savage as they watched him go. “What with Christmas and everything.”

“You’d think,” said Kett.

“You want me to go get Truelove, sir?”

Before Kett could answer, the door to the bullpen opened and Duke walked in, Porter right behind him. Duke was wearing a long strand of purple tinsel around his neck, and he beamed when he saw Savage.
