Never see death?
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.” John 8:51
Following this statement Jesus had ample opportunity to explain the meaning of this claim. However, he didn’t. We will discover when we get to our discussion on Hebrews that the author of that epistle claimed that it was appointed to each human being to die once (Hebrews 9:27). Was Jesus inferring that another passage of scripture authored by an inerrant God on the same subject is wrong? If man is required to die, then Jesus made a mutually exclusive claim in this scripture. Both cannot be correct.
Really
“And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.” John 9:1-3
In reading the majority of the gospels we have seen disease and sin linked together. But here we find the writer of John claiming that this unfortunate soul was made blind from birth merely so that Jesus could come strolling along and cure him for the sole purpose of making God appear to be the great benefactor.
Of all the scriptures that we have examined this may well be the most ludicrous that I have observed. The very idea that a caring, loving God would inflict any human being with a grievous handicap for even a moment is inconceivable. To assert that he inflicted this man for several years with no better purpose than to make himself look imposing for a brief moment is beyond the pale.
There are no doubt Christians that would contend that humans are merely God’s pawns so to speak. So he can do with us as he pleases. That view may or may not be true. But if God is actually guilty of inflicting a disease or handicap upon even one human being for no other purpose than to glorify himself, does this type of divine action merit worship?
What healed him?
“When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.” John 9:6-7
We have three separate ingredients to this miracle: spit, clay, and water. The writer never told us whether it was the holy spit, holy clay ointment, or the water that did the healing. Moreover, why all this hocus-pocus and playing the apothecary by Jesus when the blind man could have merely touched his garment in order to secure the healing?
Jesus and God are one
“My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. I and my Father are one.
