Chapter 11

Conrad’s laughter over the phone sounded like heaven—a sexy heaven with calorie-free desserts. “So that’s all I’ve been up to. Filming some heavy shit, and playing practical jokes on the crew. They’re going to get us back next week, and I’m kind of shaking in my boots.”

Leslie laughed. “I’ve seen the stuff you and Mr. Werewolf Leader pull. You deserve every pie to the face and TP’ing of your dressing rooms.”

“I hope that’s all we get.” Conrad chuckled again and then sobered. “Did the green spots come out of the shorts?”

“Nope. I was afraid to fully submerge them because, naturally, they’re dry-clean only, but the few areas I tried didn’t work. And I found some on the shirt, too. I owe your studio some money.”

“No, I think Moonbeam does.”

“Moonfellow. Elysia Moonfellow.”

“Whatever. If she’s going to pick her own name, she should at least do a better job. And while she’s at it, she should stop tossing kale smoothies everywhere.”

“It was an accident. But I get the feeling that accidents like that follow her around.”

“Me, too.”

“I don’t think I’ll have that problem with Beau. He didn’t drop anything in our meeting.”

“Do you think he’s going to be easy to work with?”

“He seems like it but, truthfully, I think I’d have hired him anyway, just so I didn’t have to put up with Melvin or Moonbeam.”

“Moonfellow,” he corrected.

“Dammit, now you’ve got me doing it.” Leslie laughed. She missed him. And her old apartment in New York. She missed her hide-out and all the lack of issues of living there under a pen name had given her. Now, everything felt overwhelming.

Conrad didn’t say anything as she thought about the things she missed.

“You still there?” she asked.

“I am. Amber left me a reminder that I have to talk to you about Kyra, but I don’t want to. I want this, the conversation, to last. I don’t want to bring her up and ruin it.”

The flutter-flapping came back in her chest. “Is she really pregnant?”

“I don’t know. And I’m not waiting to find out. Amber and I came up with our next move. It’s kind of a biggie, and I wanted to warn you about it before I post it. Amber wants me to do it right away, but if I do, you’re going to be mobbed at LAX. I hate putting you through that.” Conrad sighed.

“Amber thinks a fast response is necessary, I bet.”

“She said it’s crucial, and I have to agree with her on this one.”

“Do you have it ready?” Leslie asked.

“Yeah.”

“Post it. Now.”

“I want you to see it first.”

“Are you declaring love for her?”

“No!” Conrad sounded disgusted. It made Leslie smile.

“Are you getting back with her?”

“Hell no!”

“Calling off the divorce?”

“No.”

“Offering to cohabitate again?”

“Definitely not.”

“Then we’re good.” She grinned. She loved this crazy werewolf-killing-machine of a man.

They sat in silence again.

“Conrad?”

“Have I told you lately how much I don’t deserve someone like you?” he whispered huskily.

“You texted me this morning.”

“Then I’m saying it again. I should just set up an automatic text three times a day.
