Patrick Simpson greeted them at the door to his penthouse suite, full of enthusiastic charm and a bigger-than-life personality. At first glance, he appeared gorgeous—blond, athletic, charismatic. He was a surfer-turned-businessman who now worked as a successful orthopedic distributor for one of the world’s largest medical device companies. However, behind this highly manufactured veneer lay something vacant. Dia couldn’t put her finger on it, but something was off.

“Ladies, it is a pleasure to meet all of you,” their host said. “Please. Come in. I want to introduce you to my team.”

Team? Dia wondered. He escorted them through his foyer to a giant living room adorned with multiple sofas, glass tables, and a view stretching endlessly into the darkness of the Atlantic Ocean. Since it was now dark outside, the floor-to-ceiling windows reflected dimly lit recessed lighting along the suite’s perimeter walls.

Patrick jumped up on a limestone coffee table, threw up his arms, and commanded everyone’s attention with dramatic flair. He beckoned more than a dozen guys to take their seats on one of three white leather couches circling him. Dia had not seen them until now, having been so taken with the beautiful surroundings. She watched as men ranging in age from their 30s to 40s filed in from the kitchen and bar.

“My friends,” Patrick began. “Welcome to our annual get-together where we meet to celebrate another incredible year of sales. Once more, you’ve done it! You’ve not only hit your targets and grown the territory by double digits, but you’ve made us number one for four years in a row!”

“Hear, hear!” Several of them clinked their drinks.

“No celebration is complete without hot and sexy mamas by our side. Let me present tonight’s entertainment!”

Patrick’s men catcalled and whistled at them. Karyn beamed as Patrick took her hand.

“Follow me, ladies.” Patrick paraded all three of them around coffee tables filled with endless vodka bottles, mixers, and ice buckets. The scene reminded Dia of Paul’s bachelor party, and she felt like a heifer going to slaughter.

“Maestro Patrick!” someone shouted. Patrick dropped Karyn off in front of a group of four guys by the bar. He returned for Dia and led her to a throng of men hungry for a show in an ever-increasing circus environment. “Who wants to bid on this blonde beauty?”

The spectacle morphed into an auction with a chorus of responses. “Twenty bucks!”

“Fifty,” said another.

“Gentlemen, look at her. She’s gorgeous, and according to her manager, she clamps on you like a vise.”

He leaned in and whispered, “I’d pay fifty dollars for your fine, little ass.”

“One hundred!” a slick-looking man in his fifties said.

“SOLD! To my right-hand man and best friend, Larry,” Patrick said. He handed Dia off to the middle-aged man.

Belittled by their bidding, Dia followed Larry to a white couch in a corner. The double dose of Molly she’d taken started kicking in, helping her suppress the animosity and humiliation that had begun to bubble up once more inside her, but all the X in the world couldn’t completely chase her feelings away.
