The medical technician unspools a length of surgical tape and uses it to secure the bandage over my eye. The compression bandage on my leg looks okay. Oops, maybe not—I can see a few red pinpoints seeping through the white fabric.

What I said about having my head on straight? It applies any time you’re faking being the victim of a hit-and-run.

The results had looked great on film, though. As compensation for getting so busted up, I had been allowed to watch the dailies. I got to see myself get flipped like a coin off the back bumper of the car in question, sail through the air, and bounce off the metal wall of the warehouse. I was supposed to have been tossed into a pile of cardboard boxes but overshot those by a good three feet. At least I had them to fall onto when I rebounded off the wall.

Derrick had given the driver of the car holy hell until I’d stopped him. It had been my fault, not the kid behind the wheel, who, to be fair, looked pretty green about the gills. I had been just one step over my mark, and look what had happened. Two steps over the mark and who knows what might have gone down?

The director was in love with the shot, though, and said over and over how terrific it looked. This was welcome news for me because it meant I wouldn’t have to get rammed again on another take. My bruises were grateful for this out.

Of course, they were going to use the footage. It’s only if a stuntman gets his ticket punched on the job that they archive it. It’s one of the few unspoken rules of humanity shown in the film industry, no matter what the project.

An injury, though, and one that looked, to be fair, pretty spectacular in retrospect? Well, no one was going to be willing to waste that particular shot.

Derrick, though, has his own beef with me, and he lets me know about it as I’m packing up my stuff to leave.

“What the hell was that?” he demands.

I don’t need to ask what he’s talking about, especially when it’s causing me to limp around like I’ve been crowbarred in the leg.

“I screwed up,” I say, pulling on my jacket. “Lucky I didn’t blow the take and have to do the whole damned thing over again.”

“Damned right, you screwed up,” Derrick agrees. “What I want to know is why. How long have we worked together, man?”

“Ten years,” I estimate.

“Yeah, that’s right. A whole decade and in all that time, you’ve never been off the mark so much that you got creamed like that!”

“I made a mistake,” I protest. “What do you want me to say?”

“Any more of a mistake and you would have been a smear on the pavement! Guys like us don’t get to make mistakes like that.” He takes a breath, runs his hands through his graying hair, and looks at me levelly. “So give, man.
