Your Body Always Wins—and That’s a Good Thing

Being on a diet is a struggle for anyone. Sometimes you may find you can go weeks or even months (or sometimes years) on a diet without a hint of trouble, but eventually, the struggle will start. It’s not a sign of weakness or a lack of willpower; it’s just an inevitability of being human.

The struggle is a sign that your body wants a change. Whatever you’ve been doing may have been fine last week or last month, but it’s sure as heck not okay now. The sign could manifest as a huge craving that’s hard to say no to or an old habit that creeps back into your life. I’ve seen this struggle be everything from indulging in a night of junk food to spending a full year eating everything that had been missing from a diet.

The frustrating pattern I’ve seen over and over again is that the longer you’ve deprived yourself of something you love, the longer it’ll take to get back to a healthy diet after you’ve fallen off the wagon. Basically, the more willpower you have, the greater the chance that you’ll have a very long eating detour.

When you take a detour, your body isn’t trying to sabotage you and move you away from health; it’s just trying to find balance. It’s not a surprise that your body might scream for sugar anytime you deprive it of everything sweet. There’s a wonderful silver lining here, though: Instead of depriving yourself of everything you love that doesn’t fit inside the “healthy” box, you can look at your cravings as a request for balance.

It’s time to replace willpower with curiosity!
