It has to be noted here that in usÂing the term âshuÂdraâ AmbedÂkar was clearly not reÂferÂring to the unÂtouchÂables, whom he saw as âbroÂken menâ setÂtled outÂside the vilÂlages; he was reÂferÂring to the non-brahÂman masses whom he saw, along with unÂtouchÂables and tribÂals, as vicÂtims of the caste sysÂtem. By the 1940s, howÂever, his hope that there would be a uniÂfied strugÂgle was at a low ebb, and he was in his poÂlitÂiÂcal writÂings treatÂing âHinÂdusâ as a âmaÂjorÂityâ that inÂcluded non-brahÂmans and was posed against such miÂnoriÂties as MusÂlims and dalÂits.
NevÂerÂtheÂless, AmbedÂkarâs longer-term stratÂegy was to break up that maÂjorÂity, to disÂsolve HinÂduism itÂself, and do so by buildÂing a unity of dalÂits and midÂdle castes (non-brahÂmans) which would be both a caste and a class unity of peasÂants and workÂers, against the brahÂman-bourÂgeois ConÂgress. The last years of his life saw a reÂturn to this kind of united front, exÂpressed in the change of his SchedÂuled Caste FedÂerÂaÂtion into the (hopeÂfully non-caste) ReÂpubÂliÂcan Party. It parÂticÂiÂpated in the Samyukta MaÂhaÂrashÂtra Samiti, orÂganÂised to fight for a Marathi-speakÂing state and which was acÂtuÂally the first full left-demoÂcratic front of opÂpoÂsiÂtion parÂties. AmbedÂkar, in fact, had arÂgued that the united front should conÂtinue even afÂter the winÂning of a Marathi-speakÂing state, and fight for the inÂterÂests of the ruÂral poor; and a masÂsive land satyaÂgraha led by his lieuÂtenant DadasaÂheb GaikÂwad and comÂmuÂnist peasÂant leadÂers folÂlowed in both 1956 and 1965.
Yet, the end of AmbedÂkarâs life is reÂmemÂbered by the inÂnuÂmerÂable numÂber of dalit folÂlowÂers neiÂther for the class unity of peasÂants and workÂers, nor for the reÂnewed efÂfort at formÂing the ReÂpubÂliÂcan Party as a broad-based orÂganÂiÂsaÂtion, but for his conÂverÂsion to BudÂdhism along with nearly a milÂlion dalÂits in NagÂpur. For AmbedÂkar, and for the milÂiÂtant dalÂits who folÂlowed him, HinÂduism, in the fiÂnal analÂyÂsis, reÂmained a reÂliÂgion of caste that had to be reÂnounced and deÂstroyed if the masses of InÂdia were to win libÂerÂaÂtion. He had writÂten in 1936, in conÂfrontaÂtion with Gandhi and PunÂjab anti-caste radÂiÂcals, that it was necÂesÂsary to deal with reÂliÂgion. InÂdian soÂcialÂists, he noted:
will be comÂpelled to take acÂcount of caste afÂter the revÂoÂluÂtion if (they) do not take acÂcount of it beÂfore revÂoÂluÂtion. This is only anÂother way of sayÂing that, turn in any diÂrecÂtion you like, caste is the monÂster that crosses your path You canÂnot have poÂlitÂiÂcal reÂform, you canÂnot have ecoÂnomic reÂform, unÂless you kill this monÂster. (AmbedÂkar 1979, 47)
