The hallway lights flickered on and off as Amy led him down the toward a massive steel door.
âHow many of these are there?â He asked.
âI donât know.â She responded. âGanith has had a lot of time to build this matrix. God only knows what memories heâs held onto to build this.â
âComfroting.â Mitch said.
The door lingered in front of them now. The pale steel looked cold and uninviting. As they approached, the door released and swung outward toward them. On the other side sat a brown house on the inside of an overgrown lawn. The sun was sitting behind the hills as Mitch walked across the threshold. The door hissed as it swung shut behind them.
Once it had closed, Mitch turned and looked at Amy.
âWe go into the house.â She said, answering the question he didnât ask.
âCare to give me an idea what weâre walking into?â He asked.
âJudy Granton,â she said. Her voice trailed off. Mitch felt a flood of emotion wash over him. Seeing the house and hearing the name was enough to break the floodgates. The memory came rushing back to him, hitting him in the chest all at once. He couldnât explain it but it felt like a weight had been slammed into his chest at the mention of the name.
There was a loud crash from inside the house. Mitch snapped his attention toward it and took off running. He slammed through the front door in time to see Judy slammed up against the wall. He watched as an invisible hand carved down her legs first. The blood started running, dripping off her feet. Mitch watched in horror as the blood started to pool and form words.
Hell shall never forgive you. It said. Mitch was aware of screaming and realized it was Judy. Her voice seemed to catch up with the trauma that was going on around her. Mitch looked again to see a set of cuts going up both of her arms. The blood fell to the floor forming words of their own. Weâre waiting for you. Mitch chanced a glance at Judy, who was dead and being held to the wall still by an invisible force that reminded him of the silo.
âWhat in the hell?â Mitch asked out loud.
âYou have to relive these memories. Itâs the only way that youâre going to rebuild yourself.â
On the far side of the room, a door seemed to appear out of nothing. Mitch walked toward it, almost apprehensively. He put his hand on the doorknob and felt a hum coming through it. He gripped it for just a moment longer before turning it. On the other side of the door, there was a factory. Mitch observed men and women lined up against the wall. He recognized that each of the bodies had a terrified look on their face. He walked through the door, convinced that someone would see him, but no one did. As he stepped onto the metal grating, he heard a deep, low voice speak.
âYou are all here because we need new soldiers for this march.
