Chapter 11

If Eamon had surprised his Handmaiden by starting their first full day together since her return by asking her to spar with him, Tenacity did not show it. She’d simply dressed herself appropriately and met him in the back garden, ready to go. He grinned, edging forward so that she would have to retreat.

“I warn you, I’ve kept up my skills.” Tenacity, clad in a pair of fighting breeches and a matching shirt, bounced on the balls of her feet, just out of Eamon’s reach.

“I’ll be the judge of that,” Eamon said. “You might find I’ve kept up mine own. Perhaps even advanced.”

Tenacity laughed, bobbing and weaving for a moment before she slipped into a version of Striking Serpent. He’d taught her that pose, but she was the one who’d put in the work to perfect it. She slipped from it into Piercing Viper, similar but not exactly the same.

“You have kept up your own training,” he said, admiring. “You never learned that from me.”

Tenacity moved in fluid motion, ending with her hands on her hips. “I might be able to teach you something new, Eamon.”

“You were ever skilled at teaching me new things,” he said.

In three swift steps, she moved, tapping him beneath the chin before dancing out of his grasp with a low laugh that sounded a bit forced but had humor, nonetheless. Hope glimmered in him at the sound of it. He would cling fiercely to it…but for now, they were going to fight.

Dancing Monki. Barking Dog. Swooping Hawk. One by one, each of them moved through the positions, faster and faster, until they were actively striking and retreating. Eamon was the first to stumble, ending up on the soft grass, and Tenacity stood over him, holding out her hand to help him up.

“You’re better than I am. You must’ve had a good partner.” He frowned before he could stop himself, at the thought of that. Of her, sparring with another man. Of taking what had been theirs and sharing it with someone else.

She was barely breathing hard, but she swiped away the tendrils of hair that had stuck to her forehead. A shadow passed over her expression. “I had the best partner.”

Eamon got to his feet. Let go of her hand. He cleared his throat and took a step back from her. “He taught you much.”

“Oh, yes,” she said. “He certainly did.”

The light mood that had begun between them now soured. As though sensing it, Tenacity bounced again, gesturing. Her smile looked forced.

“Come on. Unless you’re afraid I’ll best you?”

Eamon snorted a chuckle. “Not afraid, no. From what I’ve seen so far, I’m certain you shall.”

“Let’s go, then.”

They went.

Back and forth. Harder and harder. What had started gently became fiercer and faster. She was smaller, but swifter. He was stronger. Gaze on hers, Eamon let Tenacity take the offense. He matched each of her moves with his own, and soon she was leading the match. Neither had the breath to speak, now. The only jabs were with fists and feet, not words.
