outside and last decorated several decades ago on the inside. But it was clean and the furnishings were in good condition.

It was busy, probably the only busy establishment in town, but the two of them managed to find seats at the counter.

“Hey, Tanner. The usual?” a pot-bellied man with lively dark eyes asked as he reached their end.

“Do I ever order anything else, Ted?”

“No, but I don’t like to assume.” He turned to Keith. “You must be Tanner’s latest. What’ll you be having?”

Keith hadn’t even had a chance to look at a menu. He wasn’t sure there actually was a menu. “What’s good?”

“Well, Mabel’s had a pot roast going since this morning that smells pretty tasty.”

“Sounds good. I’ll have that.”

“You got it.”

As soon as Ted was gone, Keith turned to Tanner. “Do you bring all your government witnesses here?”

“Like you said, there isn’t really anywhere else to go.”

Ted was back a minute later with coffee. Apparently, there wasn’t an option they’d drink something else. Ted winked at him and moved on.

It took a few minutes, but Keith started to realize everyone in the place was watching them.

“All right, how long until they stop?” he asked.

“Stop what?”

“Staring at me.”

“They aren’t staring at you.”

“Seeing as they know you, Tanner, I doubt you’re the person of interest.”

Tanner shrugged and sipped his coffee. “Might be both of us.”
