Chapter 7

Sophie woke engulfed in a blanket of muscle and heat. When she opened her eyes, she felt confused and disoriented, and it took her a full five seconds to realize where she was...and who she was with.

Holy crap! I slept with Jason!

It all came back to her in a single, jolting rush.

The nightmare.

The screaming.

Jason waking her up in nothing but his boxers.

Him sliding into bed and pulling me into his arms.

She’d slept in Jason Ryker’s bed. The man was still in his bed. And his strong, toned arm was draped across her midsection, pinning her to the mattress.

Sophie turned her head and found his sleepy gaze staring back at her.

“Morning.” His deep voice resonated within her.

Her breath stuttered inside her chest. “Good morning.”

She wasn’t sure what to do next. Should she try to get up? Stay where she was?

He was probably waiting for her to make the first move, so he didn’t come off as an insensitive jerk.

Turning to his side, Jason reached up, his fingers feathering across her forehead to move a few strands of hair from her eyes. “You’re so beautiful.”

Oh, my.

In an attempt to keep things light, she teased, “I think your eyesight is diminished first thing in the morning. You might want to see a doctor about that.”

Humor had his face lifting into a real, honest to goodness smile. The first one she’d seen him wear in...forever.

“You’ve got jokes, Doc. And even before caffeine. That’s impressive.”

With a chuckle, Sophie started to shift onto her side to face him directly, but winced when the wound on her arm rubbed against the mattress.

“Careful.” Jason frowned. “How badly does it hurt? Do you need another pain pill?”

She wasn’t a fan of narcotic meds. They’d always knocked her for a loop, and Sophie hated not being in control of her faculties.

“Maybe just some ibuprofen.” She yawned a huge, embarrassingly large yawn. “And Coffee. Definitely coffee.”

“I’ll go make us some.”

“You don’t have to wait on me hand and foot while I’m here, you know.”

Cupping her face, his thumb brushed back and forth against her cheek as he told her, “I like taking care of you.”

Okay, who is this man and what has he done with the hard-nosed Homeland agent I know?

Not that she was complaining. Sophie could totally get used to this softer, sweeter version.

“I should check in with the hospital.” She sat up and leaned against the headboard. “Let Dr. Nichols know I’m still alive and kicking.”

A thought struck just then. One that had Sophie cursing under her breath.

“What’s wrong?”

“My phone. My purse, my keys...they’re all at my house.”

Jason pointed to the nightstand behind her. “You can use my phone. As for your other things, we need to go by your house today, anyway. Tell you what, why don’t you make your phone call and get dressed, and we’ll head over there after breakfast?”

“Breakfast?” Sophie’s brows arched high. “You cook?”

“I can hold my own in the kitchen.”

“Good to know.”

Throwing off the covers, she swung her legs over the edge of the mattress and stood.
