Chapter 10

Grant put his foot back on the accelerator and started driving again, more slowly this time. Maya was no longer afraid they’d wrap themselves around a tree before they could get wherever it was they were going.

“Where are we going?” she asked, suddenly realizing that she hadn’t even thought about it.

“My cousin and his wife have a cabin out here. We can lay low for a while until the lawyers have a chance to figure out what to do about your arrest. I’m sure it won’t stick, that deputy made all kinds of procedural errors when he took you in, and if he tells them a story of how a bear broke you out of jail, that sure won’t help his credibility at all.

“I’m guessing they’ll realize pretty quickly that they’d be smart to just drop the whole thing before my family’s lawyers have a chance to pick their case apart.”

“But I also escaped from custody. That’s a crime, too.”

“Yes,” Grant said, “but it’s not like they could ever explain how it happened. If that deputy wants to keep his job, and keep himself out of the nuthouse, he’ll probably have to say that he just forgot to lock the door or something.

“Maybe he was just bringing you food when a truck crashed into the station, making a big hole in the wall, and in the commotion he forgot that the door was unlocked. Then maybe the truck driver decided to flee the scene of the accident and the deputy chased him, and while he wasn’t looking, you just walked out.

“You were never legally placed under arrest, so you were free to walk out the door… or so our lawyers will argue.”

Maya thought about it. Grant had a point. The sheriff’s department had to realize that no judge or jury in the world would believe a prosecutor talking about bears in the courtroom.

The case would be impossibly fuzzy, and hardly anything of value could be proven “beyond a reasonable doubt.” It would just be a waste of the taxpayers’ money, and if there was one thing the taxpayers didn’t like, it was that. They’d much rather see a woman who may or may not have been causing problems for a giant logging company go free.

“So basically…” she said, piecing the whole thing together in her mind. “You could have just left me in jail, then?”

Grant shook his head.

“I tried. I sat outside in my car… well, my cousin’s wife’s car that I borrowed, and watched you through the window. It took all my strength not to just run inside and take you away from there, but I didn’t want to make any more problems for you. But when I saw that deputy go into the cage with you…”

He trailed off, and Maya could see his knuckles turning white.

“I’m glad you came,” she said, stroking his arm to calm him down.

The touch between them was electric, and she felt her insides stirring. She wanted him, and she could feel that he wanted her, too.
