Chapter 11
Blue radiance pierced my eyelids through the dark outside of my hiding place. It must be death coming to collect me after eating tainted berries. My drowsy eyes cracked, squinting into the soft glow that floated outside of my tiny cave. The thing sparkled like a million tiny sapphires, despite the blackness surrounding it. I waited there for a while, thinking that at any moment it would come for me. It didnât.
Instead, it seemed to jump, as if beckoning me to come out. I thought about the giant whales and wondered if it were possible for the thing to be a lure atop an angler fishâs head. Maybe if I snubbed it long enough, it would go away. I lay as still as possible, keeping my eyes on the light that continued to hop and dance around just a few feet away from me. With a sigh, I concluded that I might still be under the influence of whatever was in the berries.
Or, perhaps, I had died and this was the afterlife. Regardless of the questioning thoughts, I inched my way out of the hole and stood to address the thing.
âWhat? You woke me up with your silly light and now Iâm here. Are you going to kill me? Because if you arenât, Iâd really like to go back to sleep now.â
A hushed whisper, sounding very much like a childâs voice weaved through the air surrounding me. I couldnât make out what it was saying, but the concept of it intrigued me. Kneeling down about a foot from the little thing, I stretched out a hand, trying to show it that I was friendly.
With a pop, the thing vanished, leaving me blinking and on my knees. Cautiously, I rose back to my feet and started to turn around, deciding it must have been a hallucination. Just before I was fully facing the stones again, another light emerged. I whipped around, seeing another orb floating above the water. My eyebrows drew together as the voice spoke again, this time more clearly.
"Follow," It whispered softly, followed by a chiming giggle. There was no reason for me to follow the odd creature, but my feet started working before my brain, and I was knee-deep in the water, just in front of the thing before poof, it was gone too. Was I losing my damned mind? Why the hell did I feel so compelled to follow after random lights in the middle of the night?
The pull inside of me didn't give explanations, it just waited for the light to reappear so that I could go after it again. Like a cat chasing after a laser pointer, I continued to run after it, finding it every single time that it came into my view. It led me for hours. For so long, in fact, that my legs were beginning to burn, and the dense trees started growing sparser.
Dirt under my feet turned into jagged stones, and eventually soft sand that swallowed the bottoms of my boot hungrily.
