CHAPTER FIVE

“Uncle Julian, is that you?”

“Lillie, where are you? And whose phone are you calling from?”

“I’m at my friends’ house, Rebecca and Jacob. They know all about the party. Remember, you’re making her a dress for the wedding?”

It would be hard for him to forget. Planning a sneak attack wedding for Marcus and Tyler was proving to be the most fun he’d had in years. Not since that infamous bet where Marcus had to remain celibate for three months.

“Yes, honey, I remember. I have both dresses ready for you. What can I do for you? You haven’t changed your mind, have you?”

“Uh-uh, no way. I wanna make sure you have the dates and stuff. And that you asked people to come. ’Cause it’s getting close.”

“I know, only a few weeks. Are you excited?”

“Yeah.”

“What did you tell Marcus and Tyler?” Julian had no concern Lillie couldn’t pull this off. The child was smarter than many adults he knew.

“I told them I wanted to have a royal wedding party. And they had to come dressed up. Grandma Cheryl is getting all the food plus a big cake. And cupcakes for me ’cause I love cupcakes.”

“And it is your birthday after all, and you should have what you want.”

“Yeah. Chocolate-covered.”

Deep down they had to remember that Lillie was still a little girl, and Julian made a note to buy her a special birthday gift and to save her a front row seat at New York Fashion week when the time arose.

“So, did you invite everyone? All the people Uncle Marcus works with and stuff?”

“I’m going to do that today. His new partner and then some of the men who work at the club.”

“Yippee! Thanks, Uncle Julian. I gotta go. It’s almost bedtime.”

“Good night, honey.”

A check of his watch showed it to be eight thirty. Julian figured it was as good a time as any to give Marcus’s new business partner, James Rutledge, a call. He picked up his phone and dialed Sparks.

“Hello, Sparks, can I help you?”

The smooth voice of the head of security, Darius, filled his ears.

“Darius, it’s Julian. How’re you doing?”

“Good, man, I’m good. What’s up?”

“Is James there? I’d like to talk to him.”

“Yeah, he just walked in a few minutes ago. Hold on. Come on down sometime, man. I’d love to see you. I was just thinking of that bet—when you had me watching out for Marcus a couple of years ago.”

An idea occurred to Julian. “Darius, what’re you doing December twenty-third?”
