Ali

The water feels good. I soap my body, the suds cleansing my skin.

Sweat, tears, blood, filth, come. I’m marked by myself and by Leo too.

I wonder how I got here so fast.

Leo says we’re going to die, and I believe him. A familiar fatalism is settling on me like snow.

Some people would think they were blessed to survive a gunshot to the head, but for me, it always felt as though I’d cheated. Death would get around to correcting his mistake when he got a minute.

So it’s ironic that when death came back for me, he couldn’t finish the job. Fate handed the gun to a man who wouldn’t pull the trigger.

Leo would die for me. That much, I believe. But I’m not sure he’d live for me. I don’t know if he even wants to have a future at all, let alone share it. He says he sees my pain, but it’s his own wounds he needs to attend to, and I don’t mean the ones I made on his body.

I get out of the shower and wrap myself in a towel. My phone screen shows a missed call notification, and when I open it, I’m pleased to see it’s Roxy. I swipe to video call.

“Ali!” Roxy cries, giving me a wave. She’s outdoors somewhere, and my stomach drops.

“Where are you?” I ask, looking anxiously for my daughter in the background. “I don’t see Luna. Why are you outside?”

“Leo called the hotel and told me to take Luna out someplace,” she says. “We’ve been for ice cream and then to the toy store. No prizes for guessing what she picked out!”

She tilts her phone to reveal Luna sitting on a swing set, and I realize they’re in a park. Luna is in one swing, and her new toy is in the other.

“Mumma!” Luna beams, pointing at her prize. “Got big bunny!”

We used to go to the toy store regularly just so she could hold that stuffed rabbit. It’s as big as her, and I’ve been scrimping and saving for months to buy it for Christmas.

“It was the last one, Ali,” Roxy says. She waves a credit card at the camera. “I’ve been swiping this baby like it’s my job.”

I’m so glad to see my best friend and my beloved child so happy. My heart aches that I can’t be there with them.

“Thanks for everything you’re doing, Rox. I miss Luna so much, but it helps a lot to see she’s happy. I don’t mind being alone when I know she’s got you.”

“Leo isn’t with you?” Roxy asks. “Where did he go?”

“He’s gone to speak to his boss about it all. I don’t know what to make of it, and he says he’s not sure either, but I think Leo is hiding something from me.”

“He’s a contract killer. You were his target, and you don’t think he knows anything about the reason?” Roxy sounds incredulous. “I think you are right to be suspicious. He may have his own reasons for trying to save you.
