Chapter Eleven

Eddie

No one answers my knock, and I haul my guitar into Shep’s house. I have the song I wrote while watching Clarissa sleep on the couch the other night, but it still needs music, and that’s not my strong suit. I leave my guitar in the kitchen and find Brock lying on the couch in the living room, Scout on top of him, her head resting on his shoulder. He would lie like that with Brianna, his arms wrapped around her, until one day she said enough was enough and walked out. He hasn’t been the same since.

“You need a woman,” I say, rubbing the dog’s head.

“Why? Scout’s warm and loyal. She gives good French kisses. It’s all I need right here, wrapped up in a bundle of fur.”

“You really need a woman.”

“Eh. I should just say fuck it and run off to Monte Carlo, gamble away my money and screw models for the rest of my life.”

He sounds too much like me.

I say, “That didn’t work so well for Shep.”

“I said screw ’em, not marry ’em.”

“My, haven’t we become jaded. Don’t want to do the whole ‘I do’ again?”

He kisses Scout’s nose. “What’s the point? Once was enough. I’m not into that bullshit.”

“What bullshit’s that?” I sit in the recliner next to the couch and hike an ankle to my knee.

“The marriage merry-go-round. I gave everything I had to Bri and she shoved it back at me like it was a pile of shit.”

“Shelly did the same thing, but I haven’t written it off yet.”

He looks at me, and I can see the Rubik’s Cube spinning through his thick skull, matching the colors together. “You’re living with Clarissa. Is that how it is? When did that start?”

I trust Brock. “When it shouldn’t have.”

He scoffs. “Shep’s gonna love that. Why didn’t you tell me?”

“We didn’t tell anybody.” I pause. “You don’t seem to care.”

“I don’t. People meet when they meet. Can’t control it. Clarissa’s a sweetheart, and Derrick was an asshole drunk. He didn’t deserve her.” He lifts up onto his elbows and looks over the couch’s cushion toward the stairs, but Shep isn’t there to overhear. Scout sighs at the disruption. He rubs her neck and says, “Easy girl. I’m not getting up. If Shep gives you a hard time, I have your back.”

“Thanks. I was hoping he wouldn’t find out.”

Brock shoots me an incredulous look. “Are you for fucking real? Of course he’s going to find out. How bad he’s going to freak is the question. Why don’t you just tell him?”

“Because Clarissa and I wouldn’t be together if Derrick were still alive.”

“You just said you were together before he was dead. Are you saying you never would have told her to leave him?”

Shaking my head, I say, “No, I meant if he were a decent guy and he were still alive, I never would have touched her. I wouldn’t have let her stay married to him the way he was, and that’s what Shep doesn’t need to know.
