Tyler took one of the job cars and drove the short twenty-minute journey to Wheldrake, south-east of the city centre. Karen couldn’t help but admire that within minutes of leaving the city, they were driving through unspoiled landscapes, along narrow roads skirted with tall hedgerows, agricultural land, and large swathes of mature trees. She could have sworn that even the air smelt different up here.

Twenty minutes out of central London and she’d still hit Whitechapel, a melting pot of cultures, narrow streets lined with one hundred-year-old houses, and an infrastructure creaking at its seams. The smell of diesel fumes hung in the air, and a grittiness clung to the inside of her nose and dried out her throat. The discomfort only increased in London as the temperature got hotter, and the air got drier during the summer months. There would be days when she would struggle to breathe properly because of the pollution.

“Have you always been up here, Tyler?” Karen asked, as her eyes were drawn to the ploughed fields.

“Pretty much, boss. I’ve had chances to move around the country, but seriously, I’d miss all this…” he replied, waving his hand in front of him. “I’ve got family all over the place. Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, and Trinidad of course!” Tyler laughed; his booming voice filled the car.

“Is that where your family is from?”

“Oh, yeah. The whole gang. My mum, my dad, grandparents, cousins, uncles and aunties. You name it. I don’t think any of them would ever leave. Big foodies, all of us. In fact, Trinidadians love their food. Have you ever tried any, boss?”

Karen pursed her lips together and shook her head. “Never. Nice?”

Tyler’s eyes lit up. “Oh my God, boss. It’s the best. If I ever come down to London, I’ll take you for proper Trinidadian food.”

“I’ll look forward to that.” Karen hadn’t experienced much diversity in her palate. Every time the team had gone out for a celebration, it had only been a curry. And that was spicy enough for her. Karen returned her gaze outside. “It’s beautiful here. Very relaxing.”

“It is, boss. A much slower pace of life. Well… It was until these murders landed on our desk.”

“How do you find working with the DCI?” Karen wasn’t sure if Tyler would be honest or open for that matter considering both herself and Zac were senior officers to him, but she was taken aback by his openness.

“Zac’s great. I’ve not worked for a boss like that. Well, even though he is my boss, he doesn’t feel like it… If you know what I mean?” he replied, glancing across to Karen to see if she understood.

“Do you not address Zac as boss, or guv?”

“Sorry, boss. I know what you’re saying, but Zac doesn’t want us calling him the boss, or guv, or anything like that. He’s really open and down-to-earth. Everyone is on first-name terms unless you are addressing the super.”

Karen raised a brow, unsure whether she would be happy at not having a clean line of authority when addressing a higher rank.
