Chapter 19

Sorrell

Fae were fools for glittering things. Gems and jewels. Pretty feathers. Baubles of all shapes and sizes. Especially the females—they went head over heels for this kind of ridiculous spectacle. My head throbbed and pounded as I took in the scenery before me. There was more silk and lace and skin than practical wear. And here I was, standing at the edge of the room, waiting for my … companion. I grimaced at the thought.

The Changeling had brought nothing but trouble. Yet, here I was. Awaiting her arrival. Because I was her fucking attendant. Why had I offered myself up for the position? That’s right, because there was no one else who could do it. No one else who knew what we did—that she was as weak as a Fae could be and that we were secretly harboring her friend—her human friend—back home. Orion had to take care of his brother. Keeping Tyr as far from her as possible was necessary. Even I knew that. Tyr was partially the reason why Orion was so scarred. That Fae thought of no one but himself and would do anything in his plot to get whatever he desired. He was fickle and would sooner stab his own family in the back than pledge his loyalty to them. As her intended, Roan couldn’t be near Cress in public without an attendant nearby until the wedding. I was the only logical option.

Are you sure it has nothing to do with how the girl makes you feel when you look at her? a secret voice in my head murmured.

I stiffened. No. Not in a million years. She made me feel nothing but irritation.

Irritation in your loins, perhaps, the voice replied.

I released a subtle growl of frustration. One time, I thought. I’d only felt that way one time. Even as I’d shoved those thoughts at the incessant inner voice of mine, I knew that it was a lie. I shifted from one foot to the other, a glass of Faerie wine clutched in my hand. Since that night at camp, I’d done nothing but think of her.

A clumsy oaf, yes, but at the same time … she was honest and blatant in a way other Fae females were not. Cress was not raised to be poised and proper at all times. When she got angry, she showed it. When she wanted something, she demanded it. It was something I was not used to. Something none of us were. Women were wicked creatures: slinking into beds, promising things and all the while they were planning, plotting. My very own mother was the Queen of them all. She’d seduced my father, had her heir, and then he was gone. A casualty in the early years of this war with humanity. A war that needed to end one way or another. We simply could not survive if it continued. Fae were a dying breed. Magic was leeching from the world faster than it was being reproduced. Humans could live without it—could flourish without it.
