My stomach turned a somersault when all three of them made it up and Bird yelled, “Get the cookies!”

I squeezed my eyes shut. I couldn’t watch. The twins would be furious.

Then one of the Benitez boys said, “These taste funny.”

“Spicy,” Bird agreed

“Gah!” yelled the other brother. “My mouth is on fire!”

A moment later, they slid down the pole, one after another. Sweat dripped down their faces. “Water!” Bird shouted.

“What happened to them?” Edith said, staring.

I should’ve guessed sooner. “Habanero chocolate chip. It’s a Romero specialty.” Ash and Iris had baked a batch for my birthday last year.

The twins strolled back to the playground as the Benitez brothers shoved their way toward the drinking fountain.

“So, Birdie,” Iris said, “how did you like the cookies?”

Bird glared back, her eyes watering.
