Chapter Four

Confounded, Anne gaped. Yet joy flooded her. He’d almost—almost—kissed her.

But what now?

Did he intend to claim her? The thought that he might take her filled her with a mix of unexpected longing and cold horror. She would not have refused him last night when he’d bent her over his knee. She wouldn’t have refused him when he’d spanked her earlier and she would have welcomed him after she’d found ecstasy engaged in unspeakable acts.

Her channel tightened and released at the desperate hope he would move over and into her and vow his undying devotion.

But that was foolish.

He’d told her that would be punishable by death. Besides, he was merely her trainer—and only doing his job.

As he carried her back into his room, she closed her eyes and breathed in the clean fragrance of his white shirt. Underlying the scent of mountain air and sunshine lingered a masculine scent that belonged only to him.

What was this dangerous attraction to a man who punished her and then carried her to untold heights she’d never before imagined her body could offer? It was wrong. It was forbidden.

She’d somehow confused his duty with her desire.

And still, at that moment, she would have risked anything to know one kiss.

Tenaciously, she continued to hold onto his shoulders when he placed her on his bed. “Don’t—” she managed.

His body tensed. He sucked in a rough breath and tightened his embrace. Anne wound her arms around his neck. Her heart swelled with joy but the emotion was short-lived.

Chill air brushed over her bare skin when he took her hands and firmly removed them from around his neck.

She searched his eyes. All the compassion, all the prior curiosity, had faded. All that remained was the icy, unfeeling stare that reminded her she was the novice and he, the trainer.

“I’ll ring for the servant,” he said softly.

When Anne curled back under the covers after he’d fed her breakfast, he hadn’t stopped her. While she napped, he dressed in his tightest pair of black leather breeches, hoping the clothing would tame his traitorous cock. He praised the heavens she hadn’t seen the tell-tale stain of his emission on the fall of his other breeches.

Allowing her punishment to end—despite the fact she had not done as he’d asked—was tantamount to insanity. If she realized she had the power to manipulate him so easily, his position as trainer would be doomed.

And yet, something about her adamant refusal intrigued him.

She hadn’t possessed the coquettish nature of any other candidate who’d enjoyed being punished. No. Not Anne. The memory of the combination of terror and anticipation in her eyes haunted him. And while she’d found release, she’d refused to read the letter for some other reason.

But what?

He slipped on a fresh shirt and then sat in the chair across from the bed to watch his charge. Anne’s fingers curled gently against the pillowslip. Most assuredly, she had taken pleasure in the spanking and then in being fucked with the dildo. Her wet cunny betrayed any protest she might have put up.
