Over seventy years later it seemed that although there had been a marked increase in domestic comforts for the working classes that Loudon had foreseen, some did not view this as an improvement. For example, Mrs Loane had difficulty with their attitudes to room use:

To have a locked parlour full of fine furniture is an aesthetic and moral advance upon squalor and utter indifference to appearance, but as proof of civilisation, it ranks very far behind the tidy, threadbare room, which is used every evening, and where the elder children may occupy themselves on wet days.4
