It was late afternoon when I headed back to Leavensport. I had called Ava to see where she was, and she said she had stopped at the Nuu Art Gallery to check in with Delilah, her girlfriend. I told her I’d be there soon.

“Hey, ladies, what’s up?” I said, dropping my big brown leather tote.

“Not much. I was trying to talk Delilah into taking a break for lunch with me,” Ava said.

“You hungry?” I asked. This was one of the reasons Ava and I were such good friends. Neither one of us would ever turn down food, no matter how full we were. But, when we were hungry, watch out!

“Always!” Ava rubbed her stomach.

“I ate breakfast earlier, but you know me, I can always eat,” I said.

“You two go. Ava, bring me something back. I have to do some things with the finances today. I’ve put it off too long,” she said, rubbing her temples.

I knew that feeling. I was a right-brain dominant person like Delilah, while Ava was more left-brained. She enjoyed doing the books, and all the small details that go with running a business. I hated that sort of thing.

“Want to do lunch at our place?” Ava asked.

“That’s where I had breakfast, but sure,” I said, grinning to myself. Ava also wanted to check in on things.

“Hello, and welcome to Cast Iron Creations. I’m Mirabelle, and this is Spy. Please, have a seat anywhere,” Mirabelle our hostess with the mostess gave her same spiel she said to all who entered.

“Hey Meer, hey Spy,” Ava said as Mirabelle automatically lifted her hand for the high-five she and Ava always exchanged.

We sat down to talk, and Magda came bouncing up to the table. “Huh, first Jolie, now you are both here. I get the feeling you two don’t think we can run this joint,” Magda said.

“Nah, Jolie is a control freak. I know you all know what you are doing,” Ava said, selling me out.

“Nice,” I said, as Magda ran back to get us both Cokes.

“What, it’s true, isn’t it?”

“Like you aren’t making sure things are okay, too,” I said in a huff.

“Listen–” Ava started.

I put a hand up to stop her and got up, moving to the front window.

“What are you looking at?” Ava asked.

“That man over there,” I pointed across the street.

“That’s Nestle,” Ava said, grabbing her phone.

“Oh, I didn’t even see him. Over there.” I pointed. “The man he’s talking to is the strange man Meiser was with on Thanksgiving,” I said.

Ava ran out of the shop.

I took a breath to yell to ask her what she was doing but held my tongue not wanting to make a scene. She ran across the street toward the community center. The men were in the alley between the community center and Sir Scratch A Lot’s veterinarian shop. I saw her peek into the community center then walk past the alley to the vet’s office. She walked up the steps to the vet’s, pulled on the door, which was locked, because they are closed for lunch, and came running back to our restaurant.
