CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

A man was standing in front of Denise’s car with his cell phone to his ear. Tuper could hear he was calling 9-1-1.

Tuper stepped closer to Denise and Lana followed. Lana took one look at the bloody mess and turned her head away. Tuper reached around to the back of Denise's head and plucked a few hairs out. Then he took a couple of steps toward the man on the phone and waited for him to finish his call.

“Did you see what happened?” Tuper asked.

“No, I heard some commotion from my room.” He pointed to the room by the door. “I was just getting ready to leave for the airport, but I thought I heard screams so I came outside. It was too dark to see much and I didn’t know exactly where the noise came from because it had all stopped. Then I saw a car come from over there.” He pointed to the left, further behind the Inn. “He almost hit me as he sped past.”

“He? It was a man driving?”

“I don’t know. It was pretty dark, but he or she came pretty close to me. Now that you ask, he or she was wearing a beanie, but I didn’t see a face. I guess I just assumed it was a man. It’s harder to imagine a woman doing something like this.” He paused and looked at Tuper. “Are you a cop?”

“No. Just happened to be leaving the hotel when I heard all the commotion.”

The sun was creeping onto the horizon providing more light. A couple pulling suitcases came out of the Inn and walked across the parking lot toward them. The man asked, “What was all that hullabaloo a while ago?”

The man with the cell phone pointed toward Denise. The man with the suitcase wrapped his arm around the woman he was with and led her in a different direction. Sirens could be heard in the distance, and more people started to gather.

Tuper turned to Lana. “It’s cold out here. Let’s go.”

As they went back to the car, Tuper said, “Let’s get some more hot chocolate.”

Lana looked at Tuper, tipping her head. “Really? That made you thirsty?”

“I have my reasons.”

Lana shivered and said, “Good idea, but I think I’ll have tea. And then let’s go before this place is swarming with cops.”

Tuper was impressed that Lana hadn’t fainted or screamed. It had obviously upset her but she was a tough kid.

“Can you show me the photo of Denise on my phone?” Tuper asked just before they reached the side door.

“Sure.” Lana looked at him curiously but took the phone, opened it, and brought up the photo. “Here you go,” she said as she handed it back.

They got inside just as a police car sped through the parking lot. Lana went to get the tea, and Tuper stopped Marlene and took her off to the side. She was visibly shaken. He could tell by the buzz in the room and the curious looks on the faces of the people around that word had already gotten inside.
