Q: Tell me about your son, if you don’t mind. You adopted him, correct?

A: Yes. My son, James, is the love of my life. During the war, you know, there were more children who needed families than there are today. Single women could adopt. Today I wouldn’t be allowed to do so. We know that children do best in a family with two parents, and I certainly can see that. There are times I know my son would benefit from having a father, especially now that he’s older.

But I wanted to be a mother, and I didn’t know if I’d ever find someone to marry. When the opportunity to adopt James arose, I did it. It was love at first sight. The only time I can say that has ever happened to me!
