Dear Evie,

I intended to fill this letter with all the visions and dreams we had for our future. The ones we sat and sketched out while we walked hand in hand from school…or when we’d lie under the willow tree at the cottage. Do you remember those days?

I miss them. I miss seeing the world as a place of possibilities. I miss you.

I always miss you, even if I don’t say it. You’re on my mind on the quiet days between missions, and even when I’m brushing away the sand, holding my breath, staring at an explosive, it’s you I see in my mind’s eye that second before I clip the wires. I need you to know that.

Pete got shot. He was on patrol when insurgents infiltrated the village. I’m sorry to let you know that he didn’t survive. I just got the news today that I’m allowed to go home tomorrow so that I can receive The George Cross for that night at your exhibition. Pete’s parents will receive his medal on his behalf…and there’ll be the funeral. I can’t imagine that they’ll find any comfort in a bit of silver and gold. I made the call to Katja myself. It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do.

He was my best mate…and now he is gone.

I know he was your friend, too, and I’m sorry for your loss, my love.
