In many parts of the world, our ability to meet our physiological and safety needs is ever increasing, giving us more time and energy to focus instead not just on self-actualization but on self-transcendence. As our options for work opportunities increase in a world of infinite choice, mere success does not carry the same weight it did in the past. People today increasingly want to use their talents, skills, and time to make meaningful contributions—to lead a life of significance.

A study from Achieve Consulting showed that “97 percent of millennials prefer using their individual skills to help a cause.” While this is commonly understood to be true of Millennials, who are sometimes referred to as “the purpose generation,” it really is true of all generations. In fact, a study from Imperative and LinkedIn showed that the “purpose-orientation” of people actually goes up as we move across the generations—with Baby Boomers being the highest. The point is, all generations and all people have a longing for significance.

A lot is written about how millennials want purpose. What I’ve come to believe is that everybody wants purpose. That’s the secret sauce.
