It has been said many times that the kind of loyalty President Trump expects is the kind of loyalty that you find in Puzo’s Godfather trilogy. Or the kind of loyalty that mob bosses expect from their foot soldiers. What they don’t understand is that loyalty is the tie that binds any strong organization or country. It was the key to Fred’s success, and it is something that Trump grew up witnessing firsthand. He knows it works and strictly abides by it.

Trump has grown up to believe that loyalty is a powerful force, and he continues to display it as long as the other side displays it as well. When they stop, he is truly offended. But there are those who think that Trump has no loyalty to others. They cite his many marriages and divorces and the paramours he has been associated with.

Again, the lens through which people see these events is distorted and not the same lens through which he sees it. As for women, he doesn’t think his affairs are being disloyal in any way.

The loyalty that a politician needs or a businessman needs for that matter is diametrically opposed to what commoners think of as loyalty. How could a politician in a democracy be loyal to a policy when the public no longer deems it in their best interest? Should the politician enforce his ideals or should he then follow what his constituents want? Think about that while you think about President Trump’s behavior. It doesn’t matter if he is pro-life at one point in his life or pro-choice. As long as he faithfully executes his constituents’ desires, then he is doing his job.

President Trump himself is not opposed to immigration. That much is clear. He has family members who were first-generation immigrants, and two of three wives were immigrants. He himself had a mother and a grandmother who were immigrants. He is a man surrounded by the rich diversity of the American fabric, yet he enforces anti-immigration rules. Why? Because, as a politician, his one loyalty is to his base. That is what he is supposed to do, and that is what he will keep doing.

As he grew up, there was a strong sense of loyalty that was instilled within the family. That was something his father felt was most important. His mother, however, was not steeped in a tradition of loyalty. His mother was more about being self-serving, but there is nothing wrong with that. The whole idea of being effective in this world is to be able to do what serves you the best. Not everyone can be self-sacrificing in the face of a crisis. Even when you are in a plane, the flight attendants will tell you that in the event of rapid decompression and when the masks fall from the top you have to put your mask on first before you put on the mask for your child or infant. That may sound self-serving. In fact, it is, but being self-serving is an important aspect of raising a child.
