One of the greatest challenges in the design of vehicles with speeds at the speed of light, or even at fractions of the speed of light, for example, 10% (0.1c), is to exchange information from the vehicle to the Earth in real time. Even if hypothetically one could design spacecrafts that travel at or above the speed of light, the speed of communication of information and signals is limited to the ½ the speed of light c. The factor ½ comes from satisfying first Nyquist’s criteria for zero inter symbol interference and no aliasing requirements on a communication channel [40]. As you may recall, we had introduced the concepts of the absolute speed of light c in Chapter 2. Because the speed of any waveform signal can’t exceed the speed of light c characterized by a unique frame of reference, if the speed of the vehicle is faster than the speed of light, the signal exchange will lag behind in real time. Therefore, it is imperative that all of the computer programs and steps of the mission should be fully autonomous on spacecrafts travelling at or near the speed of light. They should be perfected to the extent that they meet all kinds of emergencies and contingencies without any intervention/assistance from the control center on the Earth. Another issues is tremendous advances in sensor technology is required. At very high speeds various parameter such as spacing, velocity, acceleration and temperature of obstruction entities on the journey should be measured with very small latency. All the sensors systems developed to perform the measurements should have very low value of time constants to report and react to results of measurements. The response of the control systems, designed to alter the directions and change the speeds of vehicles, should be rapid in order to meet the challenge arising from a variety of situations.
