The Waldenses

The knowledge we’ve retained on the Waldenses has been largely written by their opponents, all from a hostile point of view. Only through centuries of careful research have we been able to arrive at a more fair and complete picture of who these people were.

After the Dark Ages had ended by the eleventh century there began an awakening. It was a strange, spiritual awakening, recorded by historians of the time, which compelled thousands of humble people to undertake a pilgrimage of sorts from various towns and villages in the Balkans to the religious capital, Byzantium. These people tramped off in vast hordes under the guidance of people like Peter the Hermit and Walter the Penniless. No one could quite explain this phenomenon; it was a new thing to the historians who reported it. It suddenly seemed that people were truly “coming out of the dark.” As these large numbers of common people sincerely searched for answers, three main resultant effects sprang forth, and took shape as separate movements.

First, there was a more pronounced support of the authority of the Gospels. Second, there developed an appeal for a life of renunciation and voluntary poverty, which soon turned into a rejection of the wealth and power of the Church. Third, there was a gradual spread of the Gnostic and Manichaean ideas relating to the origin of evil (Gnostic dualism). We are concerned here with the last two currents of thought.
