As noted, Aššur-dÄn II very likely visited the Middle Euphrates, but it is with Adad-nÄrÄrÄ« IIâs interventions that Assyrian interests in the region become tangible. This latter ruler must have undertaken at least one campaign to the Middle Euphrates prior to 901 and probably after his victorious war against Babylonia (which was fought in the eastern Transtigris, and hence avoided the Euphrates entirely).
This first campaign was undoubtedly violent, as Adad-nÄrÄrÄ« IIâs well documented second campaign of 894 was not, but TukultÄ«-Ninurta II commemorated his father as the âtrampler of Laqêâ in his inscription on a stele found at Tall ËAÅ¡Ära (RIMA 2, 0.100.1004).721 Part of this campaign is possibly preserved in a fragmentary annalistic source from his reign (KAL 3, 53: 9ʹâ13ʹ), and it must have involved a march downstream through Laqê to the polity of Sūḫu (Edmonds 2023b, 244â245), from which he was able to extract tribute (RIMA 2, 0.99.2: 33).
Adad-nÄrÄrÄ« IIâs second Medioeuphratine campaign in 894 (RIMA 2, 0.99.2: 105â119) was entirely peaceful in nature, and provides a useful indication of the Assyrian expansion into this region during this period. It is clear that ṬÄbÄte was already an Assyrian holding, but Adad-nÄrÄrÄ« II entered both (Å a)dikanni and Qaá¹nu on his march as a symbolic act of dominance (see Ch. 2.3.4), receiving tribute at both. An interesting point is that while the governor of (Å a)dikanni remains unnamed, a series of remarks accompany Adad-nÄrÄrÄ« IIâs visit to Qaá¹nu (RIMA 2, 0.99.2: 109â110).
