"Why in the hell are you protecting her? Just tell us who she is and we'll give you a bond," Martin said after banging his fist on the table. They had been at it for an hour.

O'Malley leaned back in his chair. "If my client maintains that he's innocent, how is he going to know something about some girl? If Lovett doesn't show up in a few minutes, then we're ending this meeting."

Martin had told them that they would be discussing bond arrangements in exchange for an interview. Lovett had confirmed the negotiations over the phone.

"Listen here, Witherspoon." Martin looked away from O'Malley to Witherspoon. "You are not going to have a chance at trial. You know how this thing works."

Witherspoon touched O'Malley. "I got this," he whispered in O'Malley's ear. He turned back to Martin. "I taught you all the things that you know. What makes you think that you can put me in jail?" He stood up to act intimidating and powerful.

Martin stood back a little bit. He was reminded of the times that Witherspoon barked orders at him.

"If this case wasn't weak, you wouldn't be here now trying to trick me into giving you information. I was putting killers in jail before you were born."

"Nah, this case isn't weak at all. There are just a few necessary links that have to be found. I know that you were getting money off those murders."

"Can you tell me who gave me the money? Can you say exactly what the money was for? If you could answer these questions, you'd have more than one defendant, wouldn't you?" Witherspoon's confidence had grown since he had adjusted to the situation.

"It's going to be a while before you go to trial. We are going to find that girl. I promise you that. She just didn't disappear into thin air, but we don't need her for a conspiracy charge, now do we?" He was now more determined than ever to convict him. He could almost taste it.

Witherspoon laughed out loud. He took his seat. "While you are resigning, I'll be retiring. I don't have any information for you. We'll see you at the suppression hearing. That part of the evidence is about to be thrown out."

Martin felt that he had no choice but to just shake his head at the situation. Speechless, he walked out.

Martin was beginning to think that he was in a must-win situation. Little did he doubt that Witherspoon was in some kind of conspiracy. He was having doubts, however, about getting a conviction. The way that Witherspoon was acting made him think that Witherspoon had something up his sleeve. In a sense, the ante had been pushed up.

Losing wasn't an option. It would mean that his fifteen years with the bureau would mean nothing. No retirement, no pension, nothing but embarrassment. He had to think about the significance of the evidence being suppressed.

Whether or not the evidence was suppressed, Martin knew there was a more pertinent determining factor: finding that girl.
