“Zee, no!” yelled Emmy. She ran toward the bridge, her heart beating so loud it drummed in her ears.

But Zee didn’t hear her. He leaned forward a little more, pressing his thighs on the top of the railing. “Emmy, look!” he cried. He whipped around to show Emmy his prize. But he was off-balance. He tipped over the railing and fell toward the water.

“Ahhh!” he cried.

Emmy raced onto the bridge and heard a sickly splash. She leaned over the railing, desperately searching the water for Zee. He popped up to the surface, treading water. She gasped with relief. Thank goodness Dad taught us all to swim so young!

A small log floated by. “Zee, grab the log!” she cried.

He threw both arms over it.

“Good! Now can you pull yourself on top of it?” she yelled.

Zee struggled, but finally got a leg over the log, too. He sat on it upright, like it was a horse. But the current was pushing the log downstream. It wouldn’t be long before Zee was swept downriver. Emmy looked around frantically for some way to help him.

“Zee, grab those!” said Emmy. She pointed to some vines that hung from a tree branch over the water. They were twisted like a rope and dangled above Zee’s head. He reached up and wrapped his little hands around them.

“Great job! Now, hold tight! I’m coming!” called Emmy. She raced to the path that led to the riverbank. “Claw, get help!” she yelled. But the little bear was already gone. Emmy knew Claw was well on her way home to do just that.
