Chapter 10

Ghosts don’t need permission

“Good morning, cupcake! We come bearing gifts.” Anna hands me a box from Callie’s Cakes as she walks into the Youth Center the next morning.

I open the box to look at what she brought. Oh, mummy cupcakes. Cute!

“They’re dark chocolate fudge cupcakes with vanilla frosting.”

“You had me at chocolate.” I grab one and take a bite. Anna may be crazy, but her baking skills are unmatched. Yum. I try to hand the box to Callie but she puts her hands up and jumps away.

“She’s on a d-i-e-t,” Anna whisper-shouts, “for the w-e-d-d-i-n-g.”

I roll my eyes. As if I don’t already know Callie has sworn off cupcakes until her wedding day.

Callie claps her hands. “Let’s get to work!” She marches towards my office as if she’s on a mission. I hope her mission is to escape cupcakes and not to catch a thief.

My hopes are destroyed with her first question. “Do you have a master list of the files so we can cross-reference and see what’s missing?”

“Nope. I haven’t even looked in the boxes. I put them in the storage area and pretty much forgot all about them.”

“How are we going to figure out who broke into your office, then?”

Hopefully, we won’t. But maybe I will find some clue as to what in the world of coffee is going on. Some clue the troublesome twosome don’t realize is a clue. One can hope. “Let’s get to it.”

Two hours later, most of the files have been reassembled. We’re left with a small stack of empty file folders without contents and a few files missing folders.

Anna picks up the folders. “Check this out. There are only two empty folders.”

Callie waves some papers at her. “And two stacks of files without folders.”

“Which guys do we interview? Those missing a folder or those without a file?”

Interview? Groan. I should have known.

“Duh,” Callie answers, “the ones whose files are missing obviously. A missing file means someone is trying to hide something.”

I need to stop this nonsense. “Um, guys, remember the last time we interviewed someone? It didn’t exactly lead us to a clue or anything.”

“No.” Callie giggles. “But we did see Anna nearly pee her pants in fright. I’d pay to see that again.”

I don’t disagree with her, but I don’t see how ‘interviewing’ the dudes whose files are missing will solve anything. Why would some random dude confess anything to us?

“We should tell Ben about the missing files. Let him interview the guys. Wait. Are they even guys?”

“Yep, two men. Flynn Collins and Norman Bancroft,” Anna reads from the labels.

My mouth falls open. Son of a gun. I know both of them.

“You know these men?” Callie asks.

I nod. “And you’ve met them as well.” When they look at me with blank expressions on their faces, I explain, “They were both at the Halloween party.”

Anna rubs her hands together. “Who do we start with?”

I hold up a hand. “Not so quick. Flynn Collins is a city inspector, and Norman Bancroft is a project developer.
