CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

There were two emergency vehicle entrances to the airport. The one on Turnhouse Road was used for escorting VIPs to and from the airport. It was this gate that Neil McGovern used. Chief Superintendent Jeni Bridge had been in contact with the airport manager and airport vehicles were waiting for the police convoy as it sped towards the gates. They were opened for the lead police car, which was followed by a Range Rover.

They sped across to a hangar, and then the airport escort vehicle sat off to one side while the black SUV entered the hangar. The police vehicles waited outside.

The private jet landed and taxied into the hanger. McGovern waited for the aircraft to spool down and then the door opened and the stairs were lowered. Eric Smith came down. He was an unimpressive man, not too tall, not too bulky, but he had a look about him. Something that somebody in a pub would not be stupid enough to tackle.

'Eric,' McGovern said, holding out his hand.

Smith shook it. 'All they told me was that my little girl was taken,' he said.

'We'll get to that. I have Frank with me.'

Smith walked over and nodded to Miller. 'Good to see you again. I wish it was under better circumstances.'

'Me too, Eric. But all the MIT teams are working on this.'

'Any suspects?'

'There was a prisoner escaped the psychiatric hospital–' McGovern began, but Miller interrupted him.

'He's after me. He's been calling me at home. He left a message for me in a call box. He even slipped a note into Kim's bag when she was on the bus. He wants me, Eric, and I think he's going to use Emma to get to me.'

'What's his name?'

'Miles Laing. I caught him eight years ago, and he hasn't been happy about that since.' Miller looked him in the eyes. 'If you need to vent, vent to me. This is all my fault.'

'It's not your fault. But if this is a roundabout way of getting to us, then he's playing a dangerous game.'

'I don't think it's you he wants. He wants to get to me through your daughter.'

'Our daughter, now. We'll get her back.'

'He's right,' McGovern said. 'If we have to use unorthodox methods, then so be it. Don't worry, your team will get credit if Laing gets arrested and we'll slip away, but if he thinks he's going to get one over on us, then he made a mistake.'

Smith was dressed casually in black jeans and a black shirt. He put on a lightweight windcheater.

'I have you billeted in the Edinburgh Castle barracks,' McGovern said.

'I'd like to see Kim,' Smith said.

McGovern nodded. 'She was taken to the Royal, just for a check-up. She's almost six months now.'

Smith turned to Miller. 'I'm glad for you both, Frank. I mean that.'

'Thanks, Eric.'

'Right, let's get up to the Royal,' McGovern said.

They pulled out onto Turnhouse Road again, the cars moving fast, the traffic patrol car once again taking the lead. A few minutes later, they were on the Edinburgh bypass.
