chapter sixteen

THE FIRST LIGHT, THE MONOCHROME OF PRE - DAWN, CREEPS INTO THE ROOM, insinuates itself into Nell’s waking mind. The quiet is emphasised by the call of a lonely bird. She loves the stillness, the silence, the lingering darkness, as if the world itself has decided to delay, to steal a few extra minutes before it all starts again. She nestles into Trevor. She has missed him, missed this. The form of him, the size of him; his heft, his earthy smell.

She hears a car door close, thinks nothing of it. A miner, getting out early to beat the heat. A dog barks, another car door. And suddenly, next to her, Trevor is awake, sitting upright, body tense and alert.

‘What?’ she asks, voice sleepy.

‘Shush!’ is all he says, a rough command.

He rolls out of bed, is opening his bedside drawer. And now she is fully awake, trying to interpret his actions in the gloom.

Nearby, there’s a sound like an explosion, a door splintering. Men are yelling, ‘Police! Search warrant! Police!’ And now they’re in the room, men in ski masks, guns levelled, torches flaring into her eyes. Yelling, ‘Gun! Gun!’ And screaming at Trevor: ‘Drop it! Drop it!’ And she hears the heavy thump as the weapon hits the floor. Trevor raises his hands, looking like he’s been hit by a truck.

‘You. Hands where we can see them!’ It’s directed at her; she has instinctively covered her nakedness, holding the sheets to her chest. ‘Now. Where we can see them!’ She does as she is told, holding her hands aloft, letting the sheet fall.

And past the masked men, standing behind them, she can see Carl Richter, a grim smile on his lips, satisfaction in his eyes.
