CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

TOM

THE APPETIZING AROMA of herbs and fresh baking greeted Tom as he opened the door.

"Here he is." Chris's voice called out from the kitchen. "The wanderer returns."

Tom walked along the hallway and into the kitchen at the back of the house "What are you talking about, Chris?" He pulled out one of the chairs from the table and sat down.

"Well, for a man who rarely leaves the house except to go to work, you've changed. I don't know where you've been. I've managed to miss you most of this week." Chris was wearing a red coverall apron and matching oven gloves. Something scrumptious was about to emerge from the oven. "If I didn't know better, I'd assume you'd run away to join a traveling theater troupe. Now, there's an idea."

"I go out," Tom protested.

"Oh, come on, dear. You rarely go out. And when you do, it's usually with one of us. But you were out last night, and I thought I'd catch up with you today, but when I got back from the studio this morning, you were out. There is a place on our sofa that is feeling neglected because it's used to your backside on it all weekend." Chris turned his back on Tom and pulled out a tray from the oven. He placed in on a mat and pulled out the second tray.

"Maybe my ass found some action for the weekend."

"Now that's what I'm talking about. Spill the beans. And speaking of which, do you want some dinner?"

"That lot smells lovely, but I've just eaten."

Chris took off the oven gloves and turned to face Tom. He remained standing next to whatever it was he'd baked.

"So, tell me all about him."

"He's tall, dark, and handsome."

"Where did you meet him?"

"You know I told you I was expanding my cleaning Empire? Well, he's my new client."

Chris looked thoughtful. "Last weekend you said you were expanding the domestic cleaning Empire to include straight clients too. Is he that one?"

Caught out. So Chris did listen.

"That's the one, but not so straight, obviously."

"And if I remember correctly, he works with Connor and Lee. He's a scaffolder. So what's his name?"

Since when did Chris develop this memory for detail? Or had he been taking notes?

"He's called Ben."

"A real manual worker of your own, called Ben. So did you spend last night with him?"

"We went out, but I came home. Alone, before you ask. Where were you? Get a hot date of your own?" Tom asked.

"I wish. No. Last night I came home, and you were out. I went back to the studio to work. I got absorbed in detail and, before I knew it, the birds were singing, and it was getting light outside. I came home just after ten o'clock this morning. And you weren't here. I was exhausted; I'm too old for all-nighters."

"How is your masterpiece?"

"It's still very much a work in progress, dear. I'll be putting in a lot of late nights between now and the exhibition in May. When I think it's only ten weeks away.
